A Growth Story: By The Numbers
Ecolab’s growth over the decades is reflected in key numbers. The following tables show the increase in sales, number of employees and number of patents since 1960, shortly after the company became public in 1957.
Ecolab revenues have grown organically and through acquisition. Strong organic growth has been driven by ongoing investment in innovation, expansion into markets around the world, success in serving national and global customer accounts and the development of new end markets. The years since 2010 also have included major expansion through acquisition, including Nalco and Champion Technologies in 2011, 2013, respectively, and Laboratoires Anios in 2017.

As Ecolab has grown, its global workforce has increased rapidly as it expanded globally and through new business development. Ecolab’s sales and service team has accounted for more half the company’s employee base through the years. The number of Ecolab employees has risen to more than 44,000, with a substantial part of the increase reflecting employees who joined the company through acquisitions.
The number of patents received is one measure of the company’s progress in innovation. Over its history, Ecolab has received thousands of patents to protect its innovations. But over the course of time, patents expire or they may be sold, closed or abandoned, affecting the company’s total active patents. The numbers below show the cumulative number of patents Ecolab has held globally over the decades – and the number of active patents Ecolab has held each decade since 2000.
